Mark Macleod, Founder
As Founder of SurePath Capital Partners, Mark Macleod built a company that has quickly become the premier strategic advisor in the global SMB software market and the only call buyers and sellers need to make. Mark continues to oversee the vision, overall strategy and new business development for SurePath.
Since 1999, Mark has been helping fund, grow and exit software and e-commerce businesses. With over 14 years of experience as a CFO for market leaders such as FreshBooks, Shopify and many others, Mark is often asked by investors, strategists and industry leaders to share his insights on the SMB software market.
Mark Macleod has raised hundreds of millions in capital from investors in Canada, the U.S. and Asia and sold companies to Airbnb, Blackberry, Gannett, Rackable Systems, Return Path, Thrivehive and others. He also spent 3 years as a General Partner at Real Ventures, where he led investments in a number of SMB SaaS and e-commerce companies including Unbounce and Frank & Oak.
Mark is a CPA with a Bachelor of Commerce from Brock University and a Master of Business Administration from McGill University.
Josh Scherman, Vice President
As Vice President of SurePath Capital Partners, Josh leads all aspects of putting a client in market from outreach to qualifying buyers to negotiating deals. He also manages most of SCP’s buyer relationships across the SMB ecosystem to ensure clients are in the best position possible when ready for market.
Josh began his career on Wall Street as an investment banker on the debt capital markets team at CIBC World Markets. He spent 5 years there before moving into the tech world as an operator. Since 2010, Josh has held senior business development roles in New York and San Francisco for early stage startups such as Postling and inDinero, as well as established market leaders like Constant Contact. During his time at Constant Contact, he played a role in sourcing the company’s $100M acquisition of SinglePlatform.
Along the way, Josh developed a passion for companies that serve the SMB market, which is why 100% of his tech operating career has been in SMB software. Josh is a former Director of the Small Business Web Association and has helped small and large companies succeed in the SMB space.
Josh has a Bachelor of Science in Business and Finance from the University of Florida.
Danial Shaikh, Associate
As an Associate with SurePath Capital Partners, Danial leads a team of Analysts in all aspects of the deal execution process. From conducting industry and product research to the delivery of all deal-related materials, including management presentations, pro-forma financial analyses, financial models, and more.
Prior to joining SurePath, he was a Corporate Development Manager at TELUS, one of Canada’s largest telecommunications companies, where he supported the company’s inorganic growth initiatives via the identification, evaluation, and execution of mergers and acquisitions, including its $250M acquisition of the U.S./India-based Xavient Information Systems and its €150M acquisition of the Ireland-based Voxpro.
Prior to that, Danial was responsible for financial reporting, forecasting, and budgeting across various lines of business at TELUS. Earlier in his career, Danial spent time at TD Securities, Kraft Foods, and PwC.
Danial is a Chartered Professional Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management and a Master of Accounting degree, both from the University of Waterloo.
Erik Mosney, Analyst
As an Analyst for SurePath Capital Partners, Erik is responsible for supporting clients through all technical aspects of M&A and capital raise transactions. This includes the development of financial models, cohort analysis building, management of diligence requests and more. Erik also plays a key role in assessing new opportunities and contributing to SurePath’s market research.
Prior to joining SurePath, Erik was an Associate in the Capital Markets and M&A Advisory group at RSM Canada where he provided boutique investment banking services to high growth companies, focusing on retail and technology sectors. Erik began his career at Minto Capital, The Minto Group’s private equity investment management arm.
Erik holds a Bachelor of Commerce specializing in Finance from the University of Ottawa and has passed all three levels of the CFA program. During his time at Telfer, Erik was a Portfolio Manager Leader in the Telfer Capital Fund, the first student-run investment fund at the University, of which he was a founding team member.
Sara Defina, Analyst
As an Analyst for SurePath Capital Partners, Sara is part of the delivery team responsible for supporting clients through all technical aspects of M&A and capital raise transactions. This includes the development of financial models, cohort analysis building, management of diligence requests and more. In addition, Sara plays a key role in assessing new opportunities and contributing to SurePath’s market research.
Prior to joining SurePath, Sara was a manager in the Valuations Deal Advisory group at KPMG where she provided valuation expertise and strategic recommendations for the purposes of financial reporting, mergers, acquisitions, and investment reviews across a variety of industry sectors. Sara began her career in the audit practice at KPMG, performing financial statement audits for public and private clients in the financial services industry. While at KPMG, Sara also volunteered her time assisting early-stage technology companies seeking financing through MaRS Innovation, North America’s largest urban innovation hub.
Sara is a Chartered Professional Accountant and is a Chartered Business Valuator Candidate. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto with a specialization in Accounting.
KJ Lee, Analyst
As an Analyst for SurePath Capital Partners, KJ is responsible for supporting clients through all technical aspects of M&A and capital raise transactions. This includes the development of financial models, cohort analysis building, management of diligence requests and more. In addition, KJ plays a key role in assessing new opportunities and contributing to SurePath’s market research.
Prior to joining SurePath, KJ was a FP&A manager at FreshBooks where he supported the process of raising their $43 million Series B financing round, launching the new cloud accounting platform, and optimizing the go-to-market strategy.
KJ started his career as a client finance analyst at IPG Mediabrands where he managed the growth and profitability of numerous media agencies. He also worked at D+H, a leading Canadian provider of FinTech Solutions, in the FP&A team prior to its acquisition by Vista Equity Partners in 2017.
KJ is a Chartered Professional Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Accounting and Financial Management from the University of Waterloo.
